Google Likely to Shut Down Google.cn

15 Jan 2010

The Chinese version of Google, which was launched in 2006, had to censor some of its search results under the local government’s pressure. They are no longer willing to continue censoring its results on Google.cn.

Google recognize that this may well mean having to shut down Google.cn, and potentially their offices in China.

Google launched Google.cn in January 2006 in the belief that the benefits of increased access to information for people in China and a more open internet outweighed their discomfort in agreeing to censor some results.

In mid-December, they detected a highly sophisticated and targeted attack on our corporate infrastructure originating from China that resulted in the theft of intellectual property from Google.
