Onyx International Launches Boox 60 eReader

02 Jan 2010

Boox 60, a new e-reader, made by the startup company Onyx International, was launched in Guangdong, China.

Boox 60 uses the same 6-inch electrophoretic touchscreen display (made by E-Ink Corporation) like most of the other e-books, including Kindle, of Amazon. The retail price of the Boox 60 is $349.

The 800-by-600 pixel screen of the Boox 60 supports 16 levels of gray. Letters and notes can be written on it by using a supplied stylus. Users also can annotate and highlight text in the books they are reading. The Boox 60 is readable even in bright sunlight.

The Boox 60 uses a Freescale i.MX35 microprocessor that runs at 532 MHz, with 128 Mbytes of RAM and 512 Mbytes of flash memory – which can be expanded with an SD card up to 32 Gbytes. With a USB port and built-in WiFi, the Boox 60 can be used to upload books.

A built-in 1600mAh rechargeable lithium-polymer battery gives sufficient energy to turn 8,000 pages, since electrophoretic displays only use power while turning pages.

The Boox 60 supports formats such as PDF, HTML, JPG, TIFF, TXT, RTF, EPUB, PDB, BMP, CHM, PNG, Mobipocket, as well as WAV and MP3 to listen to music via the 3.5-millimetre stereo headphone jack. This new e-reader supports multiple languages, including English, French, Spanish, German, Japanese, Chinese, and Arabic.
