Twitter Buys GeoAPI Creators Mixer Labs - Location Tracker Startup

24 Dec 2009

Micro blogging platform Twitter has bought Mixer Labs, who are the creators of GeoAPI, a comprehensive service for helping developers build geolocation-aware applications.

The Mixer Labs crew has been working on harnessing the power of local information for a couple of years and recently launched GeoAPI.

Mixer Labs as a part of Twitter will be working to combine the contextual relevance of location to tweets. This new initiative will help the tweeters understand not only 'what is happening' but where is it happening also.

Twitter will look at how to integrate the work Mixer Labs has done with the Twitter API in useful ways that give developers behind geo-enabled apps like Birdfeed, Seesmic Web, Foursquare, Gowalla, Twidroid, Twittelator Pro and others powerful new possibilities.

The company would reportedly make about $25 million from Internet-search deals with Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp, to make the micro-blogging service searchable on the Internet.
