MakeMyTrip Launches Green Initiative to Reduce Impact on Environment

11 Dec 2009

Online travel company MakeMyTrip.com has launched a green initiative under which air passengers booking tickets on the website will receive an estimation of their carbon footprint for the air journey. It then provide them an opportunity to offset it by contributing towards afforestation programmes run under the aegis of GiveIndia by Seva Mandir in Rajasthan.

The initiative has already received an enthusiastic response from air travellers. In just a month, the programme has resulted in collection of over Rs 2 lakh, used entirely for planting trees. On ground, this translates into the planting of 18,000 trees and a green cover of 50,000 square feet.

Travellers have responded very favourably to this green initiative, demonstrating that they are aware of their responsibility to the environment. A quarter of the contributors have even chosen to make the maximum-possible donation.

It is estimated that an air passenger on a Delhi-Mumbai round trip typically leaves a carbon footprint of 200 kilograms of CO2. A carbon footprint is defined as ‘the total set of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by an organization, event or product. It is often expressed in terms of the amount of carbon dioxide, or its equivalent of other GHGs, emitted.
