Mobiles without IMEI Number will be discontinued From Today

30 Nov 2009

The mobile handsets without the IMEI are set to lose connectivity by the end of the day today.

The 15-digit International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number helps security agencies trace calls made from and received on handsets. As per industry estimates, over 25 mn handsets are in circulation without IMEI numbers.

In the wake of increased threat perception from terrorists, the Department of Telecom had asked operators not to allow calls to be completed on handsets without the IMEI number after November 30.

The reason is a directive from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to disconnect all phones which do not have valid IMEIs from their networks. This move comes after a year long saga of many flip-flops and ideas some of which included things like "legalizing" an illegal handset by assigning it an IMEI number.

The morning saw huge rush at the Telecare centers to get IMEI numbers. The rush is there for the last three-to-four days but today there are at least 150-200 people at ever center. Around 1800 centers across the country are offering this service.

Telecare has the capacity of handing out 70,000 to 80,000 IMEI numbers in one day. The company has been appointed to give out IMEI numbers.
