Microsoft Launches Indian Language Supporting Tools

26 Nov 2009

Microsoft showcased a set of tools that will enable users enter text in six Indian languages into computers easily.

Microsoft Indic Language Input Tool helps you enter Indian language text directly into any application running on Microsoft Windows, such as Microsoft Word or Windows Live Messenger or into any text box on any web page.

You can enter Indian language words in a natural way using the English alphabet, which the tool transliterates into the right words in the chosen script. The tool also includes an on-screen keyboard that allows you to directly enter Indian language characters for easy editing.

The beta version of the tools will be made available as a free download soon and will initially support Bengali, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu. The technology can also be leveraged to support other syllabic languages.

The tools have been developed by the Emerging Markets Labs (EM Labs) team of the Microsoft India Development Centre (MSIDC) here.
