Google Adds Image Swirl Feature in Image Search

18 Nov 2009

Google has added a 'Swirl' functionality to their image search functionality. The feature mainly aims to present similar concepts within the image search results, thus bringing more focus to finding pictures online.

The new tool, named 'Image Swirl', automatically organizes image search results into groups and sub-groups. It builds on new computer vision research to cluster similar images into representative groups in a fun, exploratory interface.

Google Image Swirl is an experimental image search interface that shows up a grid of 12 thumbnails stacked with images. This grid represents most relevant group of images. On clicking on any of the 12 stacks, the page shows up a big circular cluster connected to a small cluster circle with remaining 11 thumbnails. The effect shown for the thumbnail grid transforming to Cluster circles is referred as "Swirl".

Sub-groups can be further explored in the cluster. The new experimental Images Swirl is a combined implementation of Picasa Face Recognition and Similar Images.

Swirl currently works for more than 200,000 queries and they are planning to include more queries in the future.
