Apple Slashes Entry Level iPhone Prices to $99

09 Jun 2009

Apple Inc has reduced the price of its entry level iPhone to $99 just after the launch of Palm Pre smart phone. It has even cut prices on several of its Mac notebooks.

Apple unveiled a new, faster, high-end iPhone (iPhone3) which can take videos, has voice features, and matches the offerings by rivals Palm and Research in Motion's BlackBerry.

The $99 iPhone will cost half as much as the $199 Pre. This slashing of the price of the iPhone is aimed to take advantage of the Pre’s limited availability.

Shares in Apple closed 0.6 per cent down at $143.85 - after a 6.5 per cent climb in the week leading up to the highly anticipated event - as Steve Jobs failed to show up and investors debated the merits of the sharp iPhone price cut.

The next-generation iPhone 3GS - the "S" stands for speed goes on sale in the US, Germany and elsewhere on June 19 for $199 to $299.
