Asus Introduces First AM3 Motherboard

01 Jan 2009

Asus unleashed its first AM3 socket based motherboard M4A78 which will support DDR3 memory.

The microprocessors supporting AMD's AM3 socket would be made using 45nm process technology.

This motherboard would either be launched with AMD's AM3 processor support at CES 2009 or after it. The AM3 socket in the Asus M4A78 is based on the AMD 780G chipset.

It's not clear whether AMD AM2/AM2+ processors would work on the AM3 based motherboards since they lack the DDR3 memory controller. But, Asus M4A78 seems to be using DDR2 memory.

The motherboard appears to have HDMI, DVI, D-sub, four USB 2.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet, optical S/PDIF out, and two PS/2 ports. Six SATA connectors and an IDE connector are visible on the board with a x16 PCIe slot, two x1 PCIe slots, and three PCI slots.
